Background
Tasked with creating a multipage typography based document, I was allowed to pick the subject matter, and being a fan of comic books I chose the legendary Jack Kirby. The goal was to avoid such typographic pitfalls as widows, orphans, and rivers while creating a visually interesting piece. The piece must have actual content, and not lorem ipsum text.
Process
I wanted to portray an American comic book legend with the same sort of maturity and elegance that a magazine such as GQ would. Calling upon a 60's style psychedelic circular pattern for the cover, I centered a youthful Kirby in the middle of the page to portray him in a manner akin to Sinatra.
Again, my goal was to portray Kirby as a classy gentleman and not just a comic book illustrator. Kirby, who fought in World War 2 didn't have the luxury of being a fan first. The image on the left helps to set that tone.
Here I wanted to highlight not just the illustration, but the content within. This work was created in the 60's and speaks to a society gone mad due to a man made device, the dreaded "Mad Bomb". I wanted portray Kirby as the visionary he was.
